On Monday, Out Magazine released its “Out 100” for 2009 – an infallible scroll of influential gay, lesbian, bi and trans politicians, pop culture deities, and, of course, Adam Lambert. It’s being reported that Adam Lambert’s management company, 19 Entertainment, has been under scrutiny as of late for trying to push Lambert back into the closet, and was downplaying Lambert’s inclusion as the #1 spot in the “Out 100.”
WELL, Out’s Editor-In-Chief Aaron Hicklin published an open letter to Lambert following allegations from the author of Lambert’s interview, Shana Naomi Krochmal, that 19 Entertainment prepped her not to ask questions that were “too gay,” or “you know, gay-gay,” as well as nothing political, including questions about the National Equality March in October.
From the letter:
“It’s only because this cover is a group shot that includes a straight woman that your team would allow you to be photographed at all — albeit with the caveat that we must avoid making you look “too gay.” (Is that a medical term? Just curious). Luckily, you seemed unaware that a similar caution was issued to our interviewer.”
Glambert responded on his Twitter page with the caveat “chill!” Well, more or less.
Whatever happened to the hybrid Groucho Marx/Woody Allen dogma of “I don’t want to belong to any club that will accept people like me as a member.” Allen has been awarded Oscars and not shown up, for Best Picture even! You’re career is fledgling, Adam Lambert. Either play ball, or don’t. That’s kind of what this whole “Pop Star” thing is about. And ditch your management team, STAT.

“Either play ball, or don’t” – exactly. Considering that basically the only things that Lambert has established about himself career-wise are that 1) he’s fantastic at karaoke and 2) his eyeliner brings all the boys to the yard, it seems very premature to try to distance him from his own queerness.

Nick: best comment ever.
I’m disgusted he acquiesced. Didn’t he already come flying out of the closet? Hasn’t he been photographed being all romantic with dudes at clubs? Sorry, you can’t go BACK into the closet. That sort of behavior only serves to excuse and perpetuate rampant homophobia–”see, even the gays are ashamed of themselves.” I call bullshit. I wish Milk were around to pontificate.
