Archbishop of York Blasts Ugandan Anti-Gay Bill

Global outcry over Uganda’s anti-gay legislation continues.

The Archbishop of York, John Sentamu, has spoken out against the proposed anti-gay legislation pending in the Ugandan government that would call for the death penalty and life imprisonment for various degrees of homosexual activity. Sentamu is one of the Anglican’s most senior priests, and made what he said was the Anglicans’ first public condemnation of what has been called the “Kill the Gays” bill.

“I’m opposed to the death sentence. I’m also not happy when you describe people in the kind of language you find in this … bill,” he told BBC radio.

The issue of gay rights has divided the 77 million strong Anglican fellowship.

Nearly 40 percent of Ugandans are Anglicans, and the country has become a rallying point for Anglican conservatives angry over blessings given to gay marriages and the ordination of gay bishops, with some U.S. Episcopal denominations switching their allegiance to the Church of Uganda following the 2003 ordination of openly gay bishop, V. Gene Robinson.

Sentamu, who was born in Uganda, said he had been in touch with his Anglican colleagues in Africa about the proposed anti-gay law, which has aroused a storm of indignation worldwide.

The Ugandan government apparently thinks that it will be enough merely to switch from the death penalty to life imprisonment, according to the latest Reuters report on this.

But there are lots of problems…the life imprisonment means a lifetime of sexual orientation ‘rehabilitation.’

In America that once meant shock treatment and lobotomies.

Additionally, as if incarcerating gays isn’t bad enough, they still plan on jailing Ugandan citizens (including journalists) if they do not report suspected homosexuals to the government.

This is Nazi-esque, McCarthy-esque, and reminiscent of the Salem Witch trials.

I have posted on this and will continue to post on this Ugandan story, because I do not think it will be going away. We need to keep the pressure on.
