Online cruising is big business. The popular website Manhunt brings in over $30 million a year in subscriptions alone. And that doesn’t even include advertising revenue.

According to Out Magazine, “Manhunt’s annual income from memberships alone is roughly the same as the total amount of individual contributions to this country’s two biggest gay political groups, the Human Rights Campaign and NGLTF.”

Now, the Boston Herald reports that one of the founders of Manhunt, Jonathan Crutchley, made a $2,300 contribution, the maximum allowable by law, to John McCain. The McCain campaign is, of course, returning the contribution.

Crutchley was asked to step down from his position as chairman of the company by his co-creator Larry Basile after several patrons of the gay hookup site cancelled their subscriptions. The contribution was first reported in this month’s Out Magazine.

I am actually surprised that Manhunt.net is making such a big deal about this. Last time I checked, gays and lesbians were allowed to be Republican (I don’t understand or condone it but hey that is similar to some people’s reactions to gay people in general). Manhunt is not a bastion of gay liberation on the forefront of political advocacy, it is a cruising website. When the CEO of an environmentally progressive energy company (which I won’t name) donated to Bush’s campaign I understood and shared the anger over a company who said one thing and donated another but Manhunt doesn’t use its huge membership to push a political agenda…just a lot of porn.
