Arde Johnson knows the right steps to take to win gold at the Gay Games. He’s already done that twice during the Physique competition (60 years and up division) in 2002 at Sydney, and 2006 at Chicago. But to Johnson, as with all athletes gearing up for an impressive Team Oregon 2010 run at Gay Games VIII in Cologne, Germany, winning is secondary.
“[Competing in the Gay Games] is not about qualifying; it is about each person’s inclusiveness, whether gay or straight, old or young, pro or beginner,” explained Johnson. “It allows everybody to participate in whatever way they wish.”
Johnson will be headed to Cologne this year, possibly competing again in the bodybuilding competition; he’ll be attending for support regardless.
His 68 years of age belie his toned-and-chiseled physique – the result of a rigorous workout schedule of one-hour per day, six days per week. But to look at Johnson, you’d think bodybuilding would have been something he’s worked on his entire life. Not so.
While Johnson did compete in Oregon marathons like the Hood to Coast Relay, and some triathlons, he didn’t begin the transition toward a more refined physicality until he was almost 60. He began working out at Gold’s Gym and the YMCA in Ashland, and also coached. After he retired from his dentistry practice in Ashland, he moved to Palm Springs. While there, he was asked to compete in the Bill Pearl Classic, which he entered as his first competition. That event was the first of more than a dozen competitions in those nascent years for Johnson, all of which he trophied in.
In 2002, Johnson was approached by Paul Mart – one of the founders of Gay Games – to join Team Palm Springs that year to compete in the Sydney Games. Johnson agreed, and the rest is history.
“I remember so well the opening ceremony in Aussie Stadium with 40,000 people and 14,000 athletes, and a stadium lit by thousands of hand-held candles, with K.D. Lang singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” reminisced Johnson. “That is the spirit of the Games.”
Johnson went on to become President of Team Palm Springs from 2004 – 2008. He recruited and trained athletes during this time, eventually meeting filmmaker and screenwriter C. Franco Calabria. The two are now partners and live in Portland.
Johnson continues to coach as a member of Team Oregon. His interest in doing his best – and possibly medaling – is surpassed only by his desire to help others do their best. Johnson had this to say to those thinking of attending Gay Games VIII this year as part of Team Oregon:
“You will never regret going, either as a competitor or a supporter. It will cost some money and time, but you will, when it is over, feel it is worth every dime you spent. It’s an unforgettable experience; and an incredible one.”

Great goin’, Arde. Hope to meet you some day soon. M registered on T.O. 2010 site since late December, early January. Had conflict with January meeting date; none was scheduled in Feb., (to the best of my knowlledge); then March meeting was re-scheduled. Finally talked with Tim last week; got a call from someone a couple days ago, who spoke so rapidly, I could not decipher clearly her name or the # she left me on a message on my cell phone; I replayed it three times, then accidentally deleted the #. Called Body Technics # on web site, only to learn it has been changed or disconnected. Hope to be at Sunday evening’s scheduled fundraising event. “Liam
P.S. I have been engaged in body sculpting aka bodybuilding, since age 21, but never competed. Am now nearly 65 and still training with free weights, machines and aerobics 3-5 times weekly. Would like to participate, but am very frustrated with a number of delays, detours and lack of responsiveness and knowhow. Please help, if at all possible.
