Saturday: Gay Guys Gardening

February 24th, 2010 at 2:59 pm by Amanda Schurr · No Comments

Are you a guy? Are ya gay? Do you garden?

If you answered yes to all three questions, you’re in luck. Get your green thumb on this Saturday, February 27, by attending the first installment in this season’s Gay Guys Gardening series. To kick off the spring lineup, the gang — which bills itself “Growing Local Food in the Willamette Valley” — will visit Tom Winterrowd’s farm in Canby, 27635 S. Oglesby Road, 97013.

Chat about garden preparation after the winter, what can be planted now, and in the next couple of months for a spring and summer harvest. Help plan upcoming events and schedule host locations for future garden work parties, then venture into Winterrowd’s garden.

The Guys meet the second and fourth Saturday of the month, starting this Saturday and running through June for a total of 9 programs. Topics will include soil fertility, hot weather crops (tomatoes, peppers, eggplants), canning and preserving berries, and more. Meetings begin at 10:30 a.m. and conclude at 1 p.m.

Membership is free, though donations are welcome and support group activities, education and development — as well as the creation of a “Tool Bank and Garden Library” for member usage.

You’re asked to RSVP with group organizers via email (Michael Wartena, michaelwartena@aol.com) or phone (Tom Winterrowd, 503-263-2696) by Friday, February 26 if you plan on attending Saturday and for more information.
