Wayne Bund, who in today’s new issue of Just Out profiled Portland artist Storm Tharp and his part in New York’s Whitney Biennial, is himself an accomplished visual artist.
An exhibition of Bund’s new work, The Great Pan is Dead, opens tonight, March 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lodge Gallery/Allied Work Architecture at 1532 SW Morrison St.
The show, including photography and video, references Plutarch’s The Obsolescence of Oracles (Moralia 419 A-E): “Twice he was called and made no reply, but the third time he answered; and the caller, raising his voice, said, ‘When you come opposite to Palodes, announce that Great Pan is dead.” (“The Death of Pan” is pictured.)
A statement by the artist reads,
“Pan is said to have been the only Greek god to die. This exhibit investigates the mythological character of Pan through photography and video. My body is utilized in image and performance to reinterpret this classical character of debauchery and celebration into a contemporary context. I use the process of inhabiting a persona to allow success and failure to play alongside one another.”
The show runs through March 26; regular gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
