I’ve been raving about the badass opera party crashers that are Opera Theater Oregon for at least two years now – their film-with-live-music tour de force “Carmen” has become the stuff of local legend – so if you haven’t seen them yet, well, you’re missing out in a major way.
Artistic director Katie Taylor’s troupe just opened their 2008-09 last night with what was by all accounts a smashing performance of queer composer Gian Carlo Menotti’s high camp melodrama – with a quick shot of spooky adrenaline - “The Medium.” Beloved PSU opera department director and mezzo-about-town Christine Meadows takes on the title role of spirit-divining Madame Flora, with stellar locals like baritone Kevin Walsh (as Mr. Gobineau) in the supporting cast.
OTO’s “The Medium” plays a handful of performances through October 31 at the Someday Lounge, 125 NW 5th Avenue in Chinatown. Tickets ($15-$50) are available online here.
Oh… and always ahead of the curve, OTO has even released a quickie YouTube promo clip for their production – and it’s kind of effing spooky!

Agreed, the Medium performance was totally awesome, and the commercial by Fountain Films was totally creepy!
