Richard Sharpe, a cross-dressing, millionaire Harvard dermatologist serving life in prison for shooting his estranged wife to death, has been found hanged in his Massachusetts cell. His arrest drew national attention when photographs of him wearing slinky dresses and fishnet stockings were widely published. His wife had said in earlier affidavits that he stole her birth control pills in an effort to enlarge his breasts. Click here for the rest of the story.

The real story here is not about a person who cross dressed but of the ongoing tragic cycle of abuse endured by so many.
How many tragedies must come about in order for the cycle to be broken?
I won’t cite all the studies, but how many violent and needless crimes are committed by people who were victimized by violence themselves.
If this person had not had a salacious or titillating cross dressing component to their life, this story would not be in the news. It would just be another prison suicide.
The newsworthiness of this is in the continuing social nightmare of the victims of abuse.

I have to agree with Laura Calvo. If this person was not Trans then this would be a non-story. Just Out should say so. Does the story list the statistics on home domestic violence cases there are nationally? Is there any logical connection between being a crossdresser and being a stressed out murder? No it simply tries to sensationalize one case and thus demonize an entire class of people. The real story here is how many news organizations, Associated Press in this case, try’s to sell its news. I think it would be good for Just Out to make a comment on how news is commonly misconstrued.
