Advice from a Friend

Blogger Byron Beck, who considers Mayor Sam Adams among his friends, told Just Out that Adams was held to a different standard.

“It’s unfortunate that gays, women and African Americans have to be held to a different standard than straight, white middle class males,” he said.

Beck hopes that Adams “stays in office, takes his lumps and gets past this.”

Bingo. Are you kidding me Portland? The story breaks and already there is an ugly-as-sin website dedicated to recalling him? Give me a break. You all need to look in the mirror at your own shortcomings and cultivate a little compassion.

My outrage is directed at the conscious decision to lie that Sam Adams made exclusively for his personal gain of elected office. This is not a good trait for anyone, particularly our new Mayor. My trust in him and my vote for him was based on his integrity, not on his personal life. And he has now breached this trust.

    Gerry:

Can Sam do no wrong in your eyes? You were so quick to snap at us on our blog (Gay Rights Watch) and attack me personally. I was a bit surprised. The fact of the matter is that Sam is our Mayor and as an elected official, he is without question held to a higher standard and rightly should be.

My biggest issue with the situation are his comments from way back when.

Regarding the allegations he stated: “I’m angry, I think they’re disgusting, they’re totally false.”

“These are some of the worst allegations you can make against a gay man and it preys on the homophobic stereotypes that a gay man cannot be trusted with young people”

Now come on Gerry, let’s get real. This looks really, really bad for all of us and his comments will be used against us by the conservatives.

This is NOT about Sam being gay. This is about an individual boldly lying to get elected and coaching a TEEN-AGER to lie for him. There are many disenfranchised populations in this world. If you think that gives you the right to act in reprehensible ways to be successful, too bad you didn’t got to work for g-dubya; you would have fit right in.

I’m not holding any one person to a different standard than any other person. Here are my standards for all of us: Don’t lie. Don’t be a jerk.

The Mayor made the decision to gamble his personal character and professional reputation and lost. Moreover, if you can’t trust your elected public servants, how effective can they be? He deserves more than a robust spanking.

Most unattached 40 something men would do just what Sam did…gay or straight. Those calling for Sam’s resignation are likely using this as an excuse to justify their already formed opinion of him. He is our mayor.

I don’t know about you but I find the ad to the right of this blog ironic.

I’m seeing a barely legal shirtless guy advertsing proudsingles.net
