More News, More Opinion

As many of you know if you read this article, Mayor Sam Adams did not come in to work yesterday.

My interview with him, loosely scheduled for after 3 p.m. didn’t happen and at 7:40 p.m. Wednesday, I received a call from his office that I would likely interview the mayor today. I expect to receive a call this morning from the mayor’s office, rescheduling that interview.

Meanwhile, if you’re looking for more opinion on the story, check out Bryan Boyd’s Gay Rights Watch for thoughts on a mayor his former employer helped elect–hint, he’s standing with Sam.

Well a lot of people including just out helped elect Sam….

hint- JO will find any excuse to make it look like only pro-resignation opinions are valid or honest

Fuck Just Out. Yesterday it completed its slide toward total irrelevancy. My only comfort is that such a relic can’t possibly stay in business much longer.

The worst part is that all the bigots commenting at Oregonlive are saying things like “even the GAY newspaper is calling for Adam’s resignation.” Just Out hardly speaks for all of us. Look at the the Hillary Clinton slant here in 2007.

Ugh, it’s been a long week. “Oregon” and “2008.”

I’m standing with Marty Davis, Just Out and its entire editorial staff. Thank you Marty for your courage and for displaying the kind of moral compass so often missing in the sexual minority community. If we are to survive and realize our full rights, we must strive for honesty and integrity in all our endeavors, no matter what.

The Just Out “editorial board” has conclusively shown through a history of mistakes culminating in the current gross embarrassment that it lacks the prudence and foresight to responsibly handle its publicly perceived role as voice of the LGBTQ community.

Sam Adams should refuse all further contact with Just out, and advertisers should discontinue support for Just Out. At this point, it has become dangerous to our welfare as a community to maintain Marty Davis in a role for which she is clearly unfit to serve.

So funny that all these people that are pissy at Just Out say they have not read the “rag” for years.
Hmmm…….so now they just magically appear to spew these nasty comments.
I’m not always pleased with Just Out, Marty, or the bunch but some of you are frikken riduculous.
If Sam Adams was a conservative mayor, a straight man who met a 17 yr old girl, then flirted with her and treated her to dinner, continued the friendship until she was 18 then had sex with her….what would you’all think?
Sam lied that he was mentoring this young man. Then when questioned about the relationship, lied to the citizens, TV, newpapers, and his co-workers. Then he had his buddy “coach” Breedlove how to lie to the press and public. As unfortunate as it is, Sam deserves to be in the pickle he’s in.
HE MADE HUGE MISTAKES AND THEN LIED ABOUT IT and that’s WRONG!!!
Queers constantly rant and rave about equality. Well folks……if queers lie and make mistakes they need to face up to it. Just like the straight folks. That’s what I call equality.
This is one ugly mess. Sam has let everyone down. He has caused much damage to the gay community.
Please remember that we don’t live in a little gay bubble. If we did, we might be able to excuse Sam’s mistake and move on. But in reality, we live in a big straight world. We must be a player in that game and try to further our causes by example. Sam Adams is not a good example. And what has happened to him, us, and our city is truly tragic.

Boyd was also interviewed on OPB this morning when I was listening at 9:25. There might be additional information there.

What’s with the Marty slamming? I don’t agree with the opinion of Marty and the editorial board of Just Out on this issue, but I certainly don’t find the organization irrelevant nor wish it out of business. It is typical for a small paper to have pretty focused editorial opinions. That is one of the strengths and weaknesses of a small staff. If you don’t like Just Out, then stop “buying” the free paper.

Back on the real topic: I am very upset and disappointed with Sam. I wish that he had not lied about the sex, but I don’t really care who he sleeps with. I do not think that this sex scandal is a resignable offence. Sam has done excellent work for this city for twenty years. I want him to keep improving Portland for twenty more. If he leaves office Portland will experience several months, or longer, of political confusion. This at a time the we can least afford it. Out city government should focused on minimizing the damage of this economic storm that the nation is in, not trying fill the void of mayoral leadership.

Marty and company: I disagree with Just Out’s call for resignation, even though I understand how the opinion was reached. Thank you for your long and continued service to our community and I wish only the best for you, your staff, and Just Out.

Sam Adams’ gay apologists don’t seem to be aware of the massive setback Adams has wrought for all of us: lying to the whole world about “mentoring” an adolescent when he was in fact, fucking him. Think this is going to play well for gay men who want to teach, tutor, or serve as real mentors in the Boy Scouts or Big Brothers? Or how about adopt children? Sam Adams knowingly and voluntarily acted in a way that confirms all the worst stereotypes and fears about gay men. Guess what, guys? Just because you are gay, does not mean that the whole world should defer to every whim of your cock.

Saying what I am saying does not make me–or any gay person in Portland who defends Sam–an apologist for him or his bad decisions. I expect that like me gay Portlanders were perhaps the most disappointed when they heard the news. So many of us look up to Sam and have I think in some cases made him a larger-than-life gay role model. And what all of this shows is a message that gay people have been delivering for years: Gay people are are just like straight people. Sam is just like anyone else–straight or gay. He’s human and he makes mistakes.

Now get the hell over it.

Now what NoPoGreely said is pretty accurate though if you say it, Marty will act childish and write you off.
