Portland writer and former Just Out columnist Marc Acito led a crowd of several hundred at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the chant, “Get back to work.” The chant, directed to Portland Mayor Sam Adams, came with reminders of Adams’ campaign promises: to strengthen Portland’s public school system, amplify the city’s creative pursuits to rival 1920s Paris, create jobs and catch up on his First 100 Days in Office agenda, among others.
Several loyal gays and allies representing Portland’s arts, business and activist community, including blogger and former Willamette Week columnist Byron Beck, longtime civil rights activist Terry Bean, “dangerous writer” Tom Spanbauer, Basic Rights Oregon executive director Jeana Frazzini, Jupiter Hotel owner Kelsey Bunker and civil rights attorney Charlie Hinkle, among many others, took the stage to speak at the tightly organized 30-minute program.
Their message was unified: “I’m with Sam.”
The Stranger newspaper editor and regional celebrity Dan Savage joined the voices pleading with Adams to stay in office. He spoke about the local media’s “bullshit campaign” against Adams. “The media makes decisions about what we can handle and they’re always wrong,” he said, specifically citing this publication and The Oregonian.
Storm Large, who told the crowd she is “kind of a big deal,” led sing-alongs to “America the Beautiful” and a localized version of “Stand By Your Man” (“Stand By Your Sam”).
Acito, the program’s MC, told Portlanders to e-mail The Oregonian, The Tribune and Just Out, telling them they made a mistake, and e-mail the City Council with messages of support for Adams.
According to this article, Adams is expected to discuss his future with City Commissioners in individual meetings today at City Hall.

Sam could have simply said “I will not dignify these accusations with an answer” or “What consenting adults do in their own time is no ones business but theirs” or even “My private sex life has no bearing upon my ability execute my responsibilities as Mayor.”
Instead, he went far out of his way to fabricate a complex story that we all know to be false and to implicate others by asking them to lie for him not once, but multiple times.
Setting aside everyone’s overly emotional conjecture, the only thing that will make any difference here are the facts and the results of any investigation.
The public will decide if this was a momentary lapse of judgment on Sam’s part, or indicative of deeper issue with honesty and forthrightness.
In 6 months the same people that hired him can decide if they want to fire him.

I was glad I went to the rally, and I hope that Sam will decide to stay.
Wm. Steven Humphrey, editor of the Portland Mercury, has also called for Sam to stay in office, in a post on the Mercury’s Blogtown site. As juvenile as the Mercury can be, I’m glad they took the time to carefully consider the situation (though they published some cheap shots at Sam in the latest issue, which Humphrey–kind of–apologizes for).
This might be an opportune time for JUST OUT–or individual members of the editorial board–to speak up if they’ve reconsidered a decision that has seemed hasty–at best–to many in the local community.

The Rally was awesome. Hollie and Marc worked really hard to make it legal. It cost about $250. You can help by donating. More info here:

I took some photos of all the awesome signs. I was was at the back so didn’t get photos of special guests.

Even if Sam stays, he will be too “damaged” to be an effective Mayor. The reality is that even if we (the gay community) decide to ‘forgive and forget’, many other citizens in the city will not. He will forever be marked as ‘the teenage sex scandal mayor’ and that is not good for Portland business. He’s gotta go and we need a fantastic replacement asap. I would suggest someone who has not spent 20 years in City Hall. Someone with real world business sense and a commitment to all citizens regardless of income, race, or social standing. I admit that I was caught up in the “fabulous-ness” of having a gay mayor….and I’d hoped Sam would be fantastic. Now he is wounded and will never recover. Our city needs a strong leader and one with less baggage. Sam: please do not drag this out any longer. When you are ‘joke material’ on the Leno show…..it’s time to quit.

Just Out:
Thank god you are finally coming to your senses after jumping on Mayor Sam with both feet within a day or two of the breaking of this “scandal”. When both parties insist Beau was 18, are still good buddies who speak glowingly about each other, there is nothing to see here–you just have to let it go! But after all, this was just a personal vendetta born our to sheer jealously, wasnt it!? Just consider yourselves lucky that Beau doesn’t have a lawyer and isnt preparing to sue your asses for libeling him by painting him as a victim, gadfly and gold digger!
After seeing the massive crowd of at least 600 show up on the steps of City Hall last night, I imagine you are finally realizing that you prematurely stabbed Sam in the back by demanding his resignation. How dare you treat one of your own that way! How the hell do you think we are ever going to get full marriage rights and someday get a gay in the White House if we are too wimpy to stand our ground in a little battle like this!? I am still very disappointed in you and can’t imagine regaining the respect I had for your paper previous to this episode at any point in the future. Jeez, I feel sorry for you with all that egg on your faces for being totally out of touch with the vast majority in the Portland Queer community you purport to serve. Just humbly shut your yaps and watch and learn! SAM WILL STAY because he has done nothing wrong and this whole mess is a Media and Reichwing witch hunt! My grade for your comportment in this matter: a “D”.

I support Marty and the paper and believe that Sam is a creepy old perv who lied to the public, had other lie for him and is just basically no one I want to know of have represent me.
7 Jaymee Cuti // Jan 24, 2009 at 10:27 am
To be clear, this blog post should not be read as a reversal of course by my publisher, Marty Davis.
The “Get Back to Work” headline quoted chanters from the rally, which I attended as a reporter.
As for me, I am a news writer, not an opinion writer. I doubt I will publicly express my opinion about whether Sam Adams should stay in office and whether Portland will or should forgive him. My opinion is no more valid than yours.
As always, I am reporting this story as an observer, not a participant. I will leave the opinions to the columnists.

It is unfortunate that the only gay publication in this town quickly comes out against Sam. It appears they have no insight to the possibility that the whole anti Sam thing may be anti-gay. It looks to be the same people we see at Pride events, the big signs with God-something or another on it. A while back I was doing some ballot thing for an event, and one of the participants pointed out that Just Out is only good for bird cage liner, and I think they were right. Portland deserves a better gay media outlet.
9 Sunflower Van Gogh // Jan 24, 2009 at 10:53 am
Well, well, well, Jaymee Cuti, we fully well realize all that you just posted–you made it all clear in your original piece:
“Portland writer and former Just Out columnist Marc Acito led a crowd of several hundred at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the chant, “Get back to work.” The chant, directed to Portland Mayor Sam Adams…”
My comments were primarily directed toward Mr Acito, a former employee at your paper, but I saw your coverage of the rally in a largely positive light as a step in the right direction by Just Out–finally! And I commend your bravery here and it was refreshing to see that not everyone there is in lock step! I realize you feel you have to reiterate the paper’s position–I admit, I am just a little disappointed by your second statement. The good thing: it reveals that a battle of sorts is raging between all of you behind the scenes and that is encouraging.
Prediction: Just Out will begin to backpedal on its premature condemnation of the Mayor Adams. One person’s opinion (Marty) is not the whole world nor the final word, even if she is “The Editor”!
10 Confused // Jan 24, 2009 at 10:56 am
Jaymee -
Was it incorrectly reported by your cohort on this blog that you are a member of the editorial board? It’s difficult enough that the world thinks this editorial board represents the views of the lgbtq community, but it’s crazy to think that it doesn’t represent the views of it’s members. Or are you all just Marty’s puppets and you’re now saying the boards opinion may not even represent the opinions of it’s members?
11 Rex Vaccaro // Jan 24, 2009 at 11:02 am
Dear Marty Davis/Just Out,
Spare me this sanctimonious bullshit PLEASE. Sam Adams was backed into a corner. He was being accused of a CRIME and had the good sense to nip it in the bud. The man was 18! Old enough to get married, join the armed forces, vote, he’s an adult and neither of them were in relationships – where’s the story? I say – Shame on you, you should know better! You should be representing our community! You of all the press should have a better understanding of the lengths at which the gay community has had to go to keep their bedroom life from being an issue. You say it’s about trust. I cannot in good faith TRUST you to represent our community. I’d like you to stop representing us until you apologize to Sam Adams, rescind your request for his resignation and ask him to stay on as our Mayor.

To the Staff of Just Out,
How dare your publication condemn our mayor when we don’t know even half the facts, and half the facts we do know are not of our damn business to begin with. When was the last time YOU lied about your sex life in the face of an ugly attack? I dare you to ask yourselves that question.
I have never liked Just Out, only tolerated it; with your banal content and cowardly editorial policy. Better you rename your pathetic rag to Just Plain Out Of It. You have done severe damage to this community with your lynch mob mentality so as to appear defensible to the lowest common denominator segment of the population. Falling in line with conservative yellow-journalistic rags like the Oregonian and the Tribune; you flaming cowards! You do not represent this community or the spirit we are trying to foster. How dare you appoint yourselves Judges, Juries, and Executioners.
If I advertised in your publication I would have already cancelled by business with you. I do however, know people who do (or perhaps now, used to) advertise with you. I intend to make it very clear to them how I feel about your lack of support to someone who we owe so much. Fair-weather friends you turned out to be, but most of all, mean-spirited cowards. Your publication is a relic of the pre-Stonewall era when we were all afraid, in denial, and wallowing in internalized homophobia. We need new leadership at Just Out, or better yet, a new voice for our community altogether.
15 KimbroJones // Jan 24, 2009 at 11:55 am
Doesn’t anyone here remember Neil Goldschmidt or Bob Packwood? They were booted from public office–and darned well should have been–for improper sexual conduct. How many of you said that a person’s sex life is no one else’s business? What the whole Sam Adams case comes down to is that homosexuals should have special rights. I say: “No Special Rights for Homosexuals.”
16 Torridjoe // Jan 24, 2009 at 12:05 pm
Kimbro–what “Improper sexual conduct” are you accusing Adams of? There’s no evidence there was any–which is why Ball was repudiated for the same groundless allegation you make here.

Thank you Will R
I have been disturbed and puzzled by Just Out’s immediate and viscious attack on Mayor Adams. Especially because prior to this story breaking Marty and crew had been fawning all over him on the pages of Just Out. As uncomfortable as I was with the obivious ass kissing I am now far more concerned with the turn-on-a-dime, throw-him-under-a-bus, lynch mob mentality that was exhibited merely hours after the story broke.
Up until now, I have read Just Out regularly and patronized their advertisers. I can assure you, never again.
18 Tab // Jan 24, 2009 at 12:15 pm
“As for me, I am a news writer, not an opinion writer,” say Jaymee Cuti in post #6. This needs clarification since she’s allegedly part of Just Out’s “editorial board” and supposedly helped craft the editorial calling for Adams’ resignation. Or is the board just a sham and it’s Marty Davis’ opinion afterall?
19 Danielle // Jan 24, 2009 at 12:28 pm
“Setting aside everyone’s overly emotional conjecture…” was obviously too much to ask in the very first post by Mixer GLT which was, by the way, the only well reasoned and intelligent post on this blog.

I am looking forward to Portland having a new gay newspaper that actually REPRESENTS and supports its gay community, rather than appeasing conservative heterosexuals. Maybe that will be the silver lining from all of this- gay portland will get a fresh and relevant news publication!
21 Kent Dahlgren // Jan 24, 2009 at 1:05 pm
Days before we were congratulating ourselves. Look! We don’t care about sexual orientation! We elected a gay Mayor!
Seriously, days later? Yes, days later even “Just Out” is caught up in the stampede, distancing itself from Sam. I’m still haunted by how horrifying the whole thing is, and I’m not even a gay man.
For some reason it makes me think of crème brûlée; the beautiful and sweet solid layer, easily smashed by one well-placed snap of a dessert spoon.
I am native of Portland, born here during the Civil Rights era, in 1967. At times I’ve been immensely proud of my home town, but right now I’m just horrified and disgusted. We’ve been pulled down, and we all lost. If ever there were a pyrrhic victory, it’s this one. Now what’s left?
It’s difficult to predict who history will declare victor as Portland’s Lowest Common Denominator. So many players, jockeying so artfully for this esteemed position. So hard to tell.
22 roz catania // Jan 24, 2009 at 1:18 pm
come on, people, we all know that if sam adams would’ve answered with an evasive answer like “this has no bearing on my duties as mayor” he would’ve been met with even more witch hunt tactics. he was afraid people wouldn’t believe the kid was 18, and we are only proving him right with this puritanical uproar.
shame on Just Out for asking Sam Adams to resign. After yesterday’s rally, I’d say you definitely don’t speak for the queer community at all. it sickens me to think that a queer publication would stand in alliance with the anti-mayor advocates, several of whom were also blatantly homophobic and preaching God’s name to justify their own hatred that their God preached against. Times like this require solidarity and clear thinking, not tabloid politics and a resignation outcry. let the dust settle, take a breath, and move on to what’s important.
sam adams can and will deliver on his goals as mayor which were the reasons we voted him on in the first place. education, health care, economy; these are the issues that deserve our attention.
FOCUS, people!! Bush lied and caused a war, where was our outrcy then?
Freaking out this is nothing shy of hypocritical.

“As always, I am reporting this story as an observer, not a participant.”
Being one of four members of the editorial board has made you a participant, Jaymee. The fact that JUST OUT has called for Sam to quit has been mentioned in numerous news stories nationally. If you have a different opinion, you should have dissented; if you don’t, that’s your right..but it seems like you’re trying to have it both ways.
24 ANN HINDS // Jan 24, 2009 at 1:47 pm
Former Creative Director, I worked at Just Out for 15 years. I am very disappointed in Just Out’s rush to judgement re Mayor Adams. In this new Obama era, how about we ALL decide to let people’s private (sexual) lives be private?
If being queer weren’t still so stigmatized (despite Sam’s election!), there wouldn’t be a story. This controversy is about two consenting adults, until proven otherwise. If the public doesn’t want 18 as an age of consent, the law should be changed.
Had it not been for a political adversary digging for dirt, the questions would never have been asked. As to the lies, I again would look to the context of homophobia–internalized as much or more than what may be outside us.
I advise the Mayor to stand his ground. And I advise Just Out to strive to avoid being our own worst enemy.
Mistakes have been made on all sides,
ANN HINDS

I can’t speak for the rest of the gay community, but I can say that everyone in my circle of friends is enraged that Just Out has joined this witch hunt and rushed to judge Sam before the facts were in. Just Out has alienated a sizable section of our community. Just how widespread that anger is, we don’t know yet; but a backlash is building. People will be reading Marty Davis the riot act for years to come, at Pride and at other community events. With this editorial Just Out has handed a valuable weapon to our enemies. If they get Sam’s scalp, they likely won’t be content to stop there — they will be emboldened to strike at us again.
You can be sure that I will make it very plain what I think of Just Out every time I do business with one of your advertisers. There’s a lot of competition out there and plenty of other sources of information on local gay businesses.
26 Obnoxious Mike // Jan 24, 2009 at 3:08 pm
I am having second, third and fourth thoughts about what the PDX Mayor should do. I’m still pissed off that he lied about the relationship, and some other possible shady deals in the cover-up, but I have been thinking some more about it. Tell me why was his relationship with the young man brought up during the campaign in the first place? It was done for one reason, so his opponent could win. Politics are nasty and vicious. Is it right, no, but its reality. If he would have come clean at that time, damage would have been kept to a minimum. He should have learned from the Clinton scandal. As Nixon said once; “it’s the cover up that gets you”. So he has a boy- toy! How many politicians have someone on the side? And what business is it of ours? At least he has good taste. I will take this bimboy over Monica L! I feel lesson has been learned. If he is to continue to have a boy-toy, come clean about it, and keep it clear of city hall. I say ride out the political storm. Now of course, if more shadiness comes to light, I may change my mind again. Hey at least this is a good diversion from the bad economic news. Who knows, perhaps Portland will be able to have the sex scandal tours. All the meeting places, oh yes, I believe I have something here..

Please don’t resign, Sam! I don’t care about your sex life, and certainly don’t blame you for initially lying about it(um, who wouldn’t?). What i do care about: improving our schools, improving public transit, and making Portland the greenest city on the planet!
28 Christian // Jan 24, 2009 at 4:08 pm
copied from another Portland blog, but it says what i’m thinking…
“I’m asking people to look at my two decades of public service and recognize this as an anomaly,” Adams told the Portland Tribune editorial board on Tuesday.
Really? What’s the anomaly? The poor judgment? The grooming? The lie itself? Getting caught in the lie? Smearing a political opponent? Paying hush money to a reporter hot on the case? Or the righteous indignation?
Which of those is the anomaly to your service to the public?
29 PDXrocks // Jan 24, 2009 at 4:16 pm
We all rushed to judgment about Bob Ball based on Sam’s lies. Bob brought up the issue of possible illegal sex to Katz and Leonard, not to the media. Sam was in fact openly dating a 17 year old at the time – he invited media scrutiny by his own public actions as an elected official. His own advisers were concerned. Where’s the concern for Bob who was unfairly hounded out of the race?
Why should we be so quick to believe that Sam is telling the truth now about Breedloves’s age during the sexual realtionship? He’s an admitted liar – we have no proof one way or another about Beau’s age – only their word and both lied over and over.
In any case, Sam’s lies and deceitful cover-up are the real issue here. He’s being investigated for official misconduct, not just illegal sexual behavior. Sam has lost his credibility and moral authority because of his unethical cover-up in order to win an election. He smeared an opponent to save his own skin.
Just Out and three other papers aren’t rushing to judgment to condemn Sam – he’s done taht himself.
Sam’s transgressions are pretty obvious to all but those blinded by their own selfish desires. Portland deserves and honest and ethical mayor who is elected fairly, not by lies and deceit.
For the record, all of my friends, gay and straight, believe Sam needs to go, and we all voted for him.
30 TM // Jan 24, 2009 at 4:22 pm
brent zenobia-
stop taking this so personally-this is not about you or being gay or taking anything away from you or some gay witchhunt…this is about lies and innapropriate behaviour by a politican. My circle of gay & straight friends take the opposite stand-the fact ARE in. He’s admitted to these allegations(Unless his admissions are more lies). End of story. Just Out has taken a reasonable position based on the admissions of the mayor. I applaud them for taking a reasoned stand and not one based on fear and emotion. Your fearmongering is misguided.
31 Faithful Queer // Jan 24, 2009 at 4:46 pm
My first opinion was that Sam Adams should resign. The lies and cover up will be too damaging for Sam to overcome and distract everyone from the business of the city. But after much thought and reading thoughts of others, I would rather see Sam stay on as Mayor, working to regain our trust (not going to be easy to do) and work to improve our city, which I truly believe he loves. The lies and cover up will forever haunt Sam Adams (as they should), but hopefully he can also be remembered for being a damn good mayor for Portland. So long as Sam finds a way to work on rebuilding our trust while still working as our mayor, I will support him. But he also needs to understand that it will be extremely difficult for any of us to believe him in the future, so hopefully he will do better than his best to prove he can be trusted. Bottom line, Portland needs someone of Sam Adams devotion and hard work ethics to bring Portland back from the Potter era and all we really have is Sam Adams who can do it.
Sadly, by Sam’s lack of judgment, it will have a seriously negative effect upon the gay community. Basically adding fuel to the fire for those who already think, with their closed minds, that gays are only out for sex. So not only does Sam Adams have to work to create a better image for himself, but the rest of the gay community will have to shine a brighter light on the truth. Personally, I’m fine with that, but it does get extremely boring repeating the truth to those who have nothing better to do than to believe and spread the lies built within themselves. Yes, Sam lied, but many others, gay and straight, do the same thing when they portray all gays in untrue stereotypes. So before you throw another stone at Sam Adams, save a few for yourselves and the lies you tell and spread.

Kathryn: Jaymee was part of Just Out’s “editorial board” and is responsible in part for Just Out’s asking Sam to resign. She has to own her part in the controversy. The entire “board” has to, lest we think Just Out’s board is a sham and it’s really Marty Davis’ opinion.
I mean isn’t HONESTY the core issue here? It cuts both ways.
37 Q_cyclist // Jan 25, 2009 at 3:41 pm
#35: I agree with that. I have long thought that the Mercury does as good of a job reporting gay issues than JustOut. And, it does not seem to have this sexaphobic feel to it with their reporting.
Maybe if Sam does get recalled and Amy Ruiz loses her job, she could find a way to start another gay newspaper in this town. Not that I want Just Out to go out of business. I just think competition is sometimes a good thing.

Mr. Mayor my voice may be small and weak in the present storm. However, I welcome you to a grand pantheon of men; both loved and hated who have been where you have been. The best minds today say you should model yourself after successful and famous people to get where you are going. Heck in Harvard you spend millions of dollars to learn to think like successful and respected leaders. Think about those well know men who have stood in harmonious vibration to where you are now.
“THOMAS JEFFERSONDNA testing on his descendants showed that Jefferson or one of his close male relatives was highly likely to be the father of Hemings’s last son, Eston. DNA testing on his descendants showed that Jefferson or one of his close male relatives was highly likely to be the father of Hemings’s last son, Eston. A later study by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation also concluded that Jefferson was likely the father of at least one of Hemings’s six children.
GROVER CLEVELAND: Ten years before Cleveland’s presidency, store clerk Maria Halpin named him as the father of her illegitimate son
WOODROW WILSON: Wilson caused a public scandal simply by getting engaged
WARREN HARDING: Harding got around. One mistress, Carrie Phillips, took $20,000 in hush money from the GOP while Harding ran for president. Another, Nan Britton, bore Harding’s child in 1919 while he was a senator.
FDR’s affair with Lucy Mercer was discovered by his wife Eleanor in 1918Mercer was with Roosevelt when he died in Warm Springs, Georgia in 1945, but this (like the affair itself) was kept hidden until much later.
DWIGHT EISENHOWER: While fighting World War II in Europe, Eisenhower allegedly began an affair with his driver, Kay Summersby.
JOHN F. KENNEDY After their marriage he reportedly continued to see other women, supposedly even sneaking them into the White House. (Mafia moll Judith Exner and actress Marilyn Monroe are two of the wilder alleged partners.)” . . . from WHO2
Heck even a man who may be considered one of the richest and most respected men in America, who at this point may wish to say you’re fired, could be looked at for clues to success through enjoyment of the gentler arts.
Go and sin no more, remembering that only those who have never sinned themselves should stand in opposition to you as the village is ripe to bash you with the stones and arrows of the current fury.
Make the decision for yeah or nay, from your own heart, but remember you stand on the shoulders of giants

This is like bizarro world here. The region’s prominent gays and lesbians, or at least those with some local name recognition, support the mayor doing the following: a) going out of his way to repeatedly lie; b) stating if he didn’t lie, he may not get elected; c) creating a situation where his colleagues no longer take him seriously; d) making out with a 17-year old in the City Hall bathroom (!?!?); e) not coming to work for a week; f) creating real division within the gay community; and g) gave a ton of ammo to those who already hate. Just step back from the situation, from your friendship with him, from your own stake in gay Portland and hopefully you’ll see how absurd this all is.
