Catholics, Evangelicals Outspend Mormons

February 5th, 2009 at 12:12 pm by Jaymee Cuti · 10 Comments

If you think the Mormons dropped serious cash to ban same-sex marriage in California, check out these figures from the California secretary of state’s office.

Results from an investigation by the Fair Political Practices Commission reveal that the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic organization, dropped $1.275 million. The evangelical group Focus on the Family, gave $657,000 in money and services.

As reported here, the Mormon Church spent nearly $188,000 more on the Yes on Prop 8 campaign than it initially stated.

This whole story is a red herring. Each of these churches actively encouraged their members – harangued them, threatened them – to spend money on Proposition 8. That’s where the millions came from, not the shell games you’re talking about here.

The core issue is that churches should NOT be tax exempt. They clearly want to be political action committees, so make them pay LIKE EVERYONE ELS for the privileges they want.

Please don’t be taken in by Mormon PR efforts.

To quote the latest LDS press release verbatim:

“Understanding the extent of donations from other organizations may help the media and the public better understand the context in which the Church’s donations were made.”

In other words, the LDS are now actively pushing the meme that they were bit players in the Prop 8 effort.

Sorry, but any way you slice this, the Mormons own at least 50% of the funding for the Yes on 8 campaign. No matter how hard they might try to spin it, nobody else even comes close.

It’s about intent to deceive, and purpose. The LDS is using the issue to gain favor among other religions. see: http://ebar.com/news/article.php?sec=news&article=3689

The LDS Church may have given only $188,000, but through a concentrated fund raising campaign of church members, those members donated over $20,000,000 directly to No on 8.

So the Church proper’s donations were only a very small percentage of the total amount donated by Mormons.

I don’t see the LDS Church trying to spin anything. Unless they screwed up their accounting, facts are facts, they donated 190k.

“harangued them, threatened them”? – Comical

Wow, for all of the tolerance and love that you people always claim to have, I don’t see much of it here. I guess you only have love in your hearts if you get your way…kind of like immature little babies. Just be glad you can exercise your perversions without being stoned to death as is the case in some countries.

People have a right to contribute their personal funds to any cause they want, regardless of where they go to church. This is a moral issue that affects our country and people have a right to speak out and support the causes important to them. Congratulations to the people of all religions and backgrounds who banned gay marriage. Do it again when it hits the ballot again in 2 years.

I’m sure the pro-Prop 8 contributors were harangued and threatened about the same amount as the anti-Prop 8 contributors were harangued and threatened.

Makes sense that Evangelicals and Catholics spent more. There are a lot more of them.
