California Prop. 8 Decision May Be Announced Thursday

May 20th, 2009 at 11:56 am by Ryan Prado · 2 Comments

Barricades have been sprouting up in the Castro district of San Francisco, and around the California Supreme Court building. Large scale rallies are being organized in San Diego, New York and San Francisco.

Rumors that a decision will be handed down on Thursday, May 21, regarding the validity of Proposition 8 are rampant in the state, and precautions are being taken regardless of the sway of the ruling.

The California Supreme Court announces its decisions on Mondays and Thursdays and in most cases will give 24-hour advance notice of the announcement. The deadline for the court’s decision is June 3, 2009.

Ironically, Thursday, May 21 marks the 30th anniversary of the White Night Riot and Friday, May 22 is Harvey Milk’s birthday.

Thanks for the update about the announcement. One thing though, I live literally at the corner of Castro & market, and work from my home office. I can tell you in real time as of right now that “tension in the Castro” is definitely NOT thick today. It’s a very normal, calm sunny Wed here, with NO signs of any impending chaos.

Rumors have been circulating all over the net all morning. One even says that the Supreme Court was to issue ruling tomorrow but that Gavin Newsom stopped it due to the anniversary issues of White Riot Night and Harvey Milk’s Birthday. Newsom’s office says all this is rumor when I called an aid there. I don’t see ANY substantive evidence that a ruling is coming out tomorrow.
