Grey Gardens, the acclaimed Broadway musical about Jackie O’s offbeat family, is entering its final week at Portland Center Stage’s Gerding Theater. With a book by Doug Wright, lyrics by Michael Korie and music by Scott Frankel, the Chris Coleman-directed production has garnered raves, especially for lead actress Rebecca Eichenberger.
Following the 1975 Mayles Brothers documentary of the same name — from which Wright worked, the riches-to-rags story of Jackie O ’s aunt and first cousin recently got the HBO treatment, with Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore devouring the roles of “Big” and “Little Edie,” respectively (both their real-life counterparts were named Edith Bouvier Beale). For the PCS production, Broadway vet Eichenberger (Phantom of the Opera, 1776, It’s a Grand Night for Singing) portrays the elder Edie in Act I, the younger in Act II (Dale Soules takes over as Big Edie for the second act).
Tix, which start at $32, are available at 503-445-3700 or www.pcs.org. The play closes June 21.
